WordPress 3.3 Media Uploader – Developer Indulgence at the expense of Reliability

WordPress 3.3 introduced a new media-upload interface. If you read about this feature inside the WordPress community then it will be hailed as a "cool" feature ... and to developers or technically oriented users sitting in front of two screens it may be. However if you think about most people this "cool" feature is actually an obstacle.

The Bhudeva Story – Creating a Library of Links on WordPress

As I mentioned in the previous Bhudeva Story post, we wanted to create a library of links. We are exploring tons of links (at the moment mostly about construction as that is our main focus, so this search will extend into other subjects), filtering out (a time consuming process) the ones we will are best, most relevant and worth sharing and those that are left we want to collect in a library that we and others can access as needed.

How to Create Data Entry Forms for WordPress with Contact Form 7

In two recent projects I've encountered a need to enable website visitors to create new information on the website. The challenge was how to capture and process the information submitted by the form. Fortunately the Contact Form 7 plugin has an action hook which makes this fairly easy to do.

Enhanced Commenting on WordPress with IntenseDebate

Introduction Comments are one of the basic mechanisms for interacting with others (yes there are more) on your blog/website. WordPress comes ready out-of-the-box with a basic commenting system but there are options to extend it’s behavior with extended commenting systems that provided added values both to you (the blogger) and to your visitors. Displaying Flat Hierarchies in WordPress

Two projects (one recently completed and one just getting started) have presented a need to display hierarchical set of terms in a "flat" presentation. In both applications I am using a WordPress custom taxonomy to show hierarchical location information. But WordPress doesn't have readily accessible functions for displaying hierarchically-sorted information. The default (and commonly used) sort order is alphabetical. Therefore the result would vary depending on the actual names.

Review of WordPress Menus User Interface

WordPress Menus are a new feature introduced in WordPress 3.0. I think that you have to have had previous experience with creating WordPress navigation elements to appreciate the new menus ... Since menus have been introduced I have replaced most of the navigation elements on numerous website projects with menus. This has also exposed some problems with the menus user interface.

WordPress and the General Public License

A heated argument in the WordPress community reached my attention yesterday. Since most of the people I engage regarding WordPress have very little knowledge of the GPL, I thought it would be a great opportunity to explain it within the context of the ongoing argument.

Are You Ready for a Website?

The title of this isn't quite right - it should say "Are you ready for a website with me?". I write this based on my beliefs on what a good website should be and the kind of work I do. I can easily sum it in one word - Content. Content is the best way for people to get to know you ... experience your uniqueness ... engage with you ... keep you fresh ...

Creating a Teachers Directory with WordPress 3.0

A project I've been working on created a need and opportunity for me to explore WordPress 3.0 Custom Posts & Custom Taxonomies. There is already plenty of thorough information on this online so I will refrain from repeating. Instead I will focus on the application I found for these capabilities and my experience in creating it.

Thections: Creating WordPress Websites with Sections

Thections is an extension to the Thematic Theme Framework. It makes it easy to create WordPress websites that have a main navigation menu that divides the website into sections - each section having it's own pages, categories, posts, sidebars, etc.
